Millions of Americans have diabetes and other conditions that increase their risk of developing hard-to-heal wounds. Fortunately, local residents who have difficult wounds can get specialized care at the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Chalmette Medical Center.

"Problem wounds can lead to infections, gangrene, disability and amputation and can diminish patients' ability to function and enjoy life," says Lee Domangue, M.D., an emergency and occupational medicine specialist and Medical Director of the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at CMC. "People who have slow-healing wounds or wounds that don't heal need aggressive treatment as early as possible to help prevent these serious complications."

Treatment makes a difference
The Center's physician-driven team of wound-care specialists evaluates each patient and develops a personalized care plan to stimulate the patient's healing. Treatment varies for each patient and may include:

  • Debridement to remove unhealthy tissue
  • Use of advanced wound-care dressings, topical products and skin grafts
  • Infection therapy
  • Compression therapy
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Instruction on how to care for wounds and prevent future wounds
  • Nutritional education about the foods, nutrients and micronutrients essential to healing
  • Use of orthotic shoes and other products that can help relieve pressure on wounds
  • Referrals to specialists for the treatment of underlying medical conditions that can hinder healing

"We also help coordinate patients' care by working with their primary care physician, home healthcare providers and ancillary service providers," says Jimmy Strain, P.T.A., Program Director of the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. "With specialized and coordinated care, most patients find that their wounds finally heal or improve dramatically."
